Sam Sand Dunes: 5 Experiences You Shouldn't Miss

20 November 2025 5 min read

About 40 km from Jaisalmer city, Sam Sand Dunes is where the Thar Desert delivers on the postcard image — rolling golden sand, camel caravans silhouetted at sunset, and a night sky largely untouched by artificial light. Here's what to prioritise if you only have one evening.

1. A camel safari at golden hour

The classic Sam Dunes experience. A slow camel ride across the dunes as the light turns amber is unhurried, quiet, and genuinely photogenic — the best time to go is roughly an hour before sunset.

2. A jeep safari for the dune-bashing crowd

If you'd rather have an adrenaline rush than a slow amble, a 4x4 jeep safari over the high dune crests is the faster, bumpier alternative — usually offered as a shorter add-on alongside or instead of the camel ride.

3. Sunset from the highest dune you can find

Skip whatever safari option you've chosen for ten minutes and just climb a dune. The panoramic view as the sun drops below the horizon is worth the short scramble.

4. A Rajasthani cultural evening

Most desert camps host a bonfire evening with live folk music and Kalbeliya dance — a fast, swirling traditional dance form from Rajasthan's Kalbeliya community. It's a good introduction to the region's culture, usually followed by a Rajasthani thali dinner.

5. A night under an genuinely dark sky

If you're staying overnight at a desert camp, step outside once the camp quiets down. Away from city light pollution, the Thar sky reveals a level of detail — the Milky Way included on clear nights — that's rare to see from most Indian cities.
